Over the Counter Pain Killers & Heart Failure??

Living with pain can be debilitating for many, and for those who suffer everyday, sometimes over the counter medications (specifically NSAIDS – like advil) are the only things keeping them going. Unfortunately, new research is suggesting that these over the counter medications may not always be our best option long-term.

A well known caution of long term NSAID use is a result of their harsh effects on the  gastrointestinal system leading to an increase in ulcer formation. Recent research has also shown NSAID use to be associated with an increased risk of heart failure.

So what does this mean? Well it doesn’t mean you need to throw out all of your dvil immediately, as these side effects were both found in people taking high doses of NSAIDs over an extended period of time.

What it does mean is that finding an alternative to managing chronic pain is very important to people who may be suffering from the types of issues requiring daily high-dose NSAID use.

Naturopathic medicine can bring many tools into effectively managing chronic pain conditions including:

  • Physical medicine
    • Acupuncture– with or without electrostimulation, an accurate Traditional Chinese medical diagnosis can guide your treatment into alleviating pain by moving Qi and removing blockages
    • Cupping- Put on the map by its use in Olympic athletes, cupping can increase blood flow to an area and help to promote healing and decrease inflammation
  • Supplements
    • Supplements can assist with healing and pain reduction and vary depending on the condition
  • Botanicals
    • Many herbs are known to have anti-inflammatory actions  (curcuma longa, salix alba, bosweillia serrata to name a few)
  • Dietary modifications
